Samwel Marwa, 32 years passed on Monday after being convicted on April 1. According to Kuria West sub-county police commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the deceased could not serve his sentence at the Migori GK prison because of his medical status hence he was isolated in a police cell.

Samwel was apparently in stable condition until Sunday around 2:22pm when he collapsed in the cell and became unconscious. He had blood-stained foam coming out from his mouth that prompted them to alert medical officers who attended to him and left him to rest after his condition improved.

On Monday however at around 7am, the medical officer who had gone to do the regular check up found him dead in the cell. Police are waiting for a report to establish the exact cause of death.

The bereaved family has been informed and are working towards moving the remains to Migori Level 4 hospital morgue.

The deceased had been jailed for six months or an alternative fine of Ksh10, 000. The incident that led to his conviction was being found in possession of illicit brew in Kuria West.
