The move comes after President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane have now been released from military detention after spending two days in detention.

They were detained at a military base late on Monday in what was seen as Mali's second military coup in nine months.

The move was propelled by a cabinet reshuffle in which two army officers involved in the previous coup lost their jobs.

Col Goïta complained that President Bah Ndaw had failed to consult him while appointing the new cabinet.

The current state in Mali today is said to be tense but calm.

The US State Department has said it will stop its security help to Mali following the latest political developments which saw the departure of two civilian leaders.
