Larry Madowo is a celebrated Kenyan journalist and also a CNN International Correspondent.

Meet Journalist Larry Madowo Before Fame

He was born in 1987 in Barding village in Siaya County.

He is currently 34 years of age.

Madowo`s Education Background

Larry Madowo went to Karapul Primary School in Siaya County. He sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education {KCPE} in 2000.

 In 2001 he joined St Gabriel’s Seminary School in Kisumu until 2004 with a dream of becoming a Priest.

In 2006, he joined Daystar University for a communications degree unfortunately due to school fees problems he later dropped out to focus on other kinds of stuff.

However, his dream was not shut since he later returned to school and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication degree from Daystar University.

Larry Madowo`s Hustling History

He worked as a tea Hawker after Graduation for his aunt Victoria in a restaurant in Gikomba market Nairobi.  He would hawk tea and ‘Mandazi’ to other business people around the area.

Later in 2007, he worked with Naivasha-based vernacular radio station Bahasha FM anchoring news in English. The Station was owned by John Mututho Chairman of NACADA.

Unfortunately, the 2007/2008 post-election woes rendered him jobless after the station was shut down.

In 2008 Larry joined KTN as a Trainee Reporter. Afterward, he launched and anchored Kenya’s first daytime business program KTN Financial Markets Live as well as KTN Business Today.

In October 2010 Madowo left KTN for NTV where he worked as a business news Anchor, Reporter, and editor. Here he launched the critically acclaimed PM Live and hosting the weekly magazine show Money Matters.

Later in May 2012, he joined the South African-based CNBC Africa as one of the main anchors and pioneered the show “Eye on Kenya” which airs on prime time.

In December the same year, he came back to NTV where he worked as the technology editor and news anchor.

In March 2018 Madowo resigned from NTV for BBC.

However, in May 2021 Larry left BBC to take up a new position with CNN as the network's Nairobi-based correspondent.

His exit news was announced by Deborah Rayner, Senior Vice President of International Newsgathering and Managing Editor, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, for CNN International.

On July 21st, 2021 Madowo earned a promotion, just two months after he was appointed by CNN as Nairobi correspondent. He was elevated to CNN International Correspondent.

 

Madowo`s Current Salary

Based on his experience he could be taking home anything between $100,000- $180,000k annually which translates loosely to about Ksh 11-19 million.

 At BBC, it's believed he was being paid between £90,000 which is KSH. 12,150,000 to £120,000 KSH.16,200,00 per year.

However, currently at CNN Madowo earns 4.5 million shillings to 12 million shillings a month.
