The matatu, which belonged to Rembo Shuttle Sacco and traveled the Nairobi-Kitengela route, was on its way to Nairobi when it attempted to pass another bus and collided with a lorry transporting sand.

"I was travelling behind the bus when it slammed into a lorry as the driver attempted to dangerously overtake another Sacco vehicle," said John Nyabuti, a witness to the tragedy.

Both of the legs of one female passenger in the driver's compartment were fully trapped.

It took about an hour for police officials from the Athi River Police Station, with the assistance of other motorists, to rescue the victim from the debris.

The wounded were brought to Shalom Community Hospital in the area for treatment.

The accident caused a traffic jam that stretched for almost a kilometer beyond the Athi River exit. The bus was towed to the police station at Athi River.

Ms. Agnes Makau, the traffic commander at the Athi River Police Station, confirmed the event and asked motorists to follow traffic laws to avoid accidents, stating that they will enhance vehicle patrols, particularly along the busy roadway.

"There were no fatalities, but we would want to warn motorists to be more cautious, particularly in the morning when their eyesight may be obstructed by morning fog," Ms. Makau added.

Since January 2022, a total of 89 accidents have been registered in Nairobi, resulting in 172 fatalities.
