Motorists using the Nakuru to Nairobi highway will pay toll fees for upto 30years once it's dual upgrade is completed.

This will be part of the 175 kilometre upgrade which will start at Rironi proceed to Nakuru town and end at Mau Summit. This upgrade is estimated to cost ksh160 billion.

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) said that the private investor contracted for the project will set up toll stations where motorists will pay for using the road.

KENHA manager Kefa Seda said that they will raise finances for the project's operations and operate the road on pre-agreed standards and specifications. The concession period is 30 years and they will run it for 26.5 years.

The main purpose of the upgrade is to reduce congestion from Rironi to Mau Summit through  Maai Mahiu, Naivasha, Gilgil and Nakuru town.The construction is set to Commence in 2021 and run for about 42 months. The rate of tolls will be gazetted by the Minister of transport. 

Macharia directed that the motorists would pay between ksh100 and ksh1700 and the determining factor is the type of vehicle passing through the expressway. The toll charges will be paid on top of the levied charged on fuel.

In any case you pass the toll station without paying the fee you will be guilty of an offense and liable to a fine not more than 5,000 or to imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or both.
