Jumwa and her aide Geoffrey Okuto Otieno are accused of murder and assault in connection with the death of a man and the injuries of several others during the Ganda Ward by-election in 2019.

In the October 15 incident, the man was shot dead in a scuffle between rival ODM party supporters in Ganda Ward in Malindi, Kilifi County.

Alfred Kahindi, the party agent, testified before Mombasa High Court Judge Anne Ong'injo on Monday that Jumwa, her two bodyguards, and a crowd stormed the home of ODM candidate Reuben Katana, causing violence.

Kahindi said he and other party officials, among them Katana’s representatives, had met to deliberate on guarding the Ganda ward by-election votes.

“A police Landcruiser approached the homestead, the party officials left the meeting and briefly talked to the officers, who then left,” he testified.

Another police vehicle is said to have pulled into the compound, followed closely by two vehicles ferrying the self-christened ‘21st-century Mekatilili Wa Menza’ and her two bodyguards.

Kahindi narrated how Jumwa then walked into the meeting, flanked by a crowd of supporters.

“I heard Ms. Jumwa castigating the police for failing to do the work that she had sent them to do. She then promised to do it herself,” he said.

At that point, he said, Jumwa’s supporters started throwing stones, and the MP ordered them to burn Katana’s houses.

Chaos ensued at the scene after the group in Katana’s homestead retaliated, forcing police to fire in the air and lob teargas at the two groups.

The witness said that the ODM supporter was shot in the fiasco after police dispersed the rowdy youth.

“I saw Jumwa, Okuto, and another person. I don’t know whether they were armed because I did not see them with guns,” he said.

“Ngumbao died as a result of the chaos that erupted when the suspects and their supporters stormed our meeting. Though I did not see them shooting anyone,” added Kahindi.
