A month after moving away from home in quest of brighter pastures, 35-year-old Joseph Kiarie lost touch with his family.

The family was informed that thugs in Nairobi had attacked and killed a person who resembled Kiarie.

While some of the family members went to the municipal morgue to identify the body and confirmed it was him, others questioned it.

The family went ahead and made funeral arrangements despite the misunderstanding and buried him.

His mother Mary Wambui claimed that she was certain that her son had passed away because he ceased communicating with them as frequently as he once did.

"The person we buried resembled him but due to shock they proceeded to bury him," she said.

Wambui noted that when Kiarie called her on Tuesday night, she was taken aback.

She described how she requested Kiarie to come home so that they could chat when she first got the call, stressing that she did not tell him what had happened while he was away.

"When he came I confirmed it was him, that was when it hit us that we had buried the wrong person," she said.

Kiarie said that after leaving his house, he traveled to Githurai and worked as a porter, but he thought this was not providing him with enough money.

Due to this, he moved to Gatura in Gatanga, where he has been plucking tea on farms to support himself.

"I am in shock to come home and find a grave and my family believes am the one they buried," he added.
