Kibaki, who died on Friday, April 22, fell ill a few days before his death and was admitted to a Nairobi hospital.

His family was said to have stayed by his side, with only his inner circle kept up to date on his whereabouts and progress.

According to reports, Kibaki was doing well until Wednesday, April 20, when his health deteriorated.

According to sources familiar with Kibaki's whereabouts, he had been ill for nearly a fortnight and his family was hopeful that he would recover.

His kin, however, made certain that, unlike in previous years, his health and admission were kept private, with only close family members and friends permitted to visit him.

Kibaki's last photos to be released to the public were released by his family in November 2021, while he was celebrating his 90th birthday.

Furthermore, in an interview with KTN News on Friday, April 22, National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya revealed that the late president's family had restricted visitors due to the ongoing pandemic.

"For the last six months, he spent most of his time with his family. Obviously, at his age, the vulnerabilities were much more and we understood that he doesn't require a lot of interaction” He said.

“We all provided that protection because when he saw people, he was eager to meet them. He spent most of his time in Muthaiga keeping up with his appointments with the doctors. He has rested a happy man," Kimunya added.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was always kept up to date on Kibaki's health, was said to have taken charge of the situation on Thursday, April 21, and was closely monitoring his predecessor's progress.
