National Police Service has issued a statement following the eruption of violence during Deputy President William Ruto’s visit to Kondele, Kisumu County.

The statement read, “Based on the intelligence gathered, there was tension within Kondele owing to alleged distribution of campaign logistical funds amongst local groups.

This intelligence was promptly shared by police with H.E the Deputy President’s team with recommendations to skip the affected area during the tour.”

Several vehicles in the Deputy President’s convoy were destroyed in the violence which says protestors throwing stones towards Ruto’s vehicles.

Police officers charged with maintaining order during the rally were forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse rowdy youth who tried to disrupt the DP's campaign caravan in Kondele early Wednesday. 

Amid the chaos, the DP was heard trying to calm down the crowd, even as he accused his rivals of hiring youth to throw stones.

"Kisumu hii ni Kenya. Na Kisumu hii tutahakikisha tumekomboa Kisumu kutoka mambo ya mawe," said Ruto.
