The multinational streaming video-on-demand service provider giant, Netflix, seeks to boost revenues and client base from the international arena by unveiling a new mobile subscription service for the Kenyan market. The mobile plan is free and offers a quarter of the company's content to its subscribers. Popular content includes shows like 'La Casa De Papel' or Money Heist and Blood and Water's African series.

The company hopes the free plan will entice new subscribers to sign up for a paid plan. It is not the first time the service provider has experimented with giving free service; however, the strategic operation in the Kenyan market is set to be broader than previous efforts. The Netflix spokesperson asserts that the move aims to boost use from the African market by engaging viewers and availing a feel of the platform.

The company is shifting its focus away from saturated markets like that in its home base of the United States, which is highly competitive with streaming providers such as Disney and HBO setting high expectations. The company's efforts to increase Africa's adoption include investing in locally championed programming such as 'Queen Sono.' The free plan subscribers will, however, be excluded from the average subscribers in the company's yearly reports.
