Kenyans are now perplexed as supermarket shelves continue to be empty due to a scarcity of flour, despite President Uhuru Kenyatta's direction that all cooking flour retail at Ksh. 100 to cushion the gap left by the absence of affordable Unga in the market.

On Thursday Bright Kenya news conducted a fact check At Naivas supermarket in Mountain Mall along Thika Superhighway and found that there was no cooking flour on the shelves. The empty shelves were replaced by Chapati Flour.

As of Wednesday 3rd a 2kg packet of the maize meal, famously referred to as Unga, was retailing at Sh257 where only ten Packets were Left.

A supermarket attendant revealed to Bright Kenya news Journalist that the government had given a directive of bringing cheap unga into the market yet it unavailable.

"There is no any unga here at the moment. Hatujui unga imefungiwa wapi. Kama iko na ni bei ghali watu watanunua lakini sasa wanasem ni mia moja na pia haipatikani sijui watu watafanya aje especially na hii election inakuja without food".The attendant noted.

However, a second fact check around Riverside Estate, which is close to Mathare, found that the Ksh. 100 Unga Branded Jogoo is now being sold for Ksh. 210. Due to its Scarcity, you had to wait in line to get it.

SokoUgali was also retailing at Ksh. 210.

A few days ago, Peter Munya, the secretary for agriculture, charged Miller with retaining the produce and threatened those discovered to be doing so with vague legal punishment.
