The use of certain non-aspirin anti-inflammatory painkillers during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, a large new study shows

Here are painkillers that pose risks to the fetus when taken in or cause miscarriage

Diclofenac

Diclofenac causes miscarriage (pregnancy loss), serious bleeding, or premature birth(baby born too early) if taken during pregnancy.

Misoprostol

Can cause contractions of the uterus. It can also induce abortions when administered.

Cough and cold medicine

Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine are based on decongestants both may cause constriction of blood vessels potentially increasing the risk of specific birth defects in the first trimester and the risk of elevated blood pressures if used later in pregnancy.

Aspirin

Taking high doses of aspirin during the third trimester increases the risk of premature closure of a vessel in the fetus's heart. The use of high-dose aspirin for longer periods in pregnancy also increases the risk of bleeding in the brain of premature infants.

Ibuprofen

Pregnant women are advised to avoid ibuprofen during pregnancy, especially if they are 30or more weeks pregnant. Taking the medication at 30 weeks and beyond could cause premature closing of the baby's ductus arteriosus.
