Parliament Summons John Munyes and Charles Keter over Fuel Subsidy Withdrawal

The parliament has summoned the Petroleum and Energy Cabinet Secretaries over the fuel Subsidy withdrawal on Tuesday, September 14 that resulted in an increase in fuel prices.

Senate Speaker, Ken Lusaka has now called the two cabinet Secretaries to appear before the house next Tuesday.

Mr Lusaka also ruled that all senators be invited to sit at the chamber.

The objective of the sitting is for the Cabinet Secretaries to explain the reason behind the fuel subsidy elimination, a move that has complicated the cost of living measures.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei had filed a statement requesting for the summoning of the mentioned Cabinet Secretaries.

The writ follows the fuel subsidy elimination where the State removed the subsidies of Sh7.10 on petrol, Sh9.90 on diesel, and Sh11.36 on kerosene that applied on the prices of fuel sold in the month to September 14.

The Fuel Subsidy elimination raised the price of petrol by Sh7.58 a litre in Nairobi to Sh134.72 while diesel jumped Sh7.94 to Sh115.6 a litre — the highest fuel price in Kenya’s history.

The Fuel subsidy had been in effect from March.
