Peres Jepchirchir, representing Kenya at the New York City marathon on Sunday, November 7, 2021, was the only Olympic gold medalist in the field and became the first such medalist to win the marathon. In a span of 2:22:39, Jepchirchir was eight seconds off the world record and recorded the third fastest time in the race’s history. Jepchirchir’s victory comes three months after she won Gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The men’s open division also had impressive results from Kenya’s highlanders. Albert Korir, making his two-year comeback, crossed the finish line in 2:22:44, a fourteen-second improvement over his previous record, where he finished second.In contrast, the women’s race was much more competitive, with the top three women finishing the race thirteen seconds apart.
