The MTV Video Music Awards which was held on August 28, was an MTV-hosted event that honored the year's greatest music videos. The event took place at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, and Jack Harlow served as the show's hosts. A record 26 first-time candidates were in the hunt for the coveted Moon Person awards at this year's show, including Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd.

Following the announcement of the categories, Doja Cat, Harlow, and Styles each received eight nominations, making them the nominees with the most nominations. With four victories, Harlow received the most nomination honors.
