Student leaders from different universities in the country held a demonstration on Tuesday 8th June over rising in crime in universities across the nation.

However, the police halted the demonstrations saying the student leaders led by Multimedia University student president Jennifer Mbogo did have clearance to hold the demos.

The students demanded an end to gender-based violence and increased security for female students who have been falling victims.

The students had T-shirts branded #EndRapeCulture.

Embakasi East MP and former SONU chairman Babu Owino also intervened during the demonstration.

The Universities Presidents’ Council of Kenya on Monday wrote to the Nairobi Police Commander requesting him to provide security for all the participants of the demonstrations.

The latest incident of insecurity in higher learning institutions saw Masinde Muliro University students take to the streets about a week ago, to protest the demise of their fellow student who was raped and murdered in Kakamega Town.
