5 people died and 9 others were hospitalized in Oldonyoro and Kipsing in Isiolo County after consuming alcohol.

The victims had bought the liquor at Rodongokwe market at the border of Isiolo and Samburu counties on Sunday. 

According to Peter Ngechu, acting chief executive officer of Isiolo Health Services, the deceased were three males and two women.

One died in Oldonyoro town while the other four died in Kipsing town.

Three patients were sent to Isiolo Teaching and Referral Hospital while six others were hospitalized at Kipsing Health Center were treated and then released.

The victims had gone to the Rodongokwe market to sell their livestock before purchasing the beverage and distributing it to both market areas.

“The team got 2 samples of liquor. One mother who died owns a bar in oldonyiro. She is said to be the one who distributed the liquor to one teacher who owns a bar at Longopito,” said the report in part. 

Ngechu stated that they had seized a carton of the alcoholic beverage to help with the investigations.

According to the health report, the county governor has directed the surveillance team to search the region to find any other person who drank the alcohol.

“The situation is under control. Surveillance, laboratory team, and Public Health officers are still on the ground to collect more information." 

The samples were collected for a lab experiment to identify the chemical that may have contributed to the deaths.

The chief officer has since requested the public's patience as the probe continues.
