The suspects were apprehended by a team of a special multi-agency team who were guarding a vehicle checkpoint they had set up on the highway.

This occurred after they pulled over a land cruiser whose driver was acting strangely.

"Upon a detailed check of the vehicle conducted by a narcotic sniffer dog from the K-9 Eastern command, 41 stones of marijuana locally known as shashamane that was tightly wrapped in a khaki paper and sealed with heavy layers of tape were recovered."

The police managed to recover street 73.6 kg of hemp whose street value is at Sh2,576,000.

The suspects had stashed the bags containing contraband in a hidden compartment under the vehicle’s back seat.

According to DCI, their intelligence leads suggest that the drugs are obtained by the traffickers from associates in a neighboring nation.

Since then, security along the popular roadway has been increased.

"Kenyans are reminded that marijuana is a prohibited drug and being found in possession, trafficking or growing the plant attracts heavy penalties of up to 20 years behind bars," DCI warned.

The authorities came to the conclusion that money made from selling the drugs was being utilized to finance criminal activity.
