Police Speak On Matatu Crew Protest Following Westlands' Traffic Snarl Up

According to the statement, public service vehicle operators were irritated by the road design at the Westlands roundabout, which failed to provide them with an alternative location to pick up and drop off passengers.

"Preliminary report indicates that the protesters were aggrieved by what they alleged to have been an interference with their pick up and drop off points along the highway prompted by the new road design in the area.

"The matatu protesters registered their concerns with respective agencies and the congestion has since been cleared," police stated.

Police have rejected accusations in the media that matatu operators were harassed, leading to their protest in Westlands on Thursday morning.

The pick-up and drop-off zone outside the Naivas Supermarket in Westlands has been chosen as the elevated expressway's entry point.

As a result, matatus are obliged to pick up and drop off passengers on the sidewalk, obstructing other road users.

The police further guaranteed motorists of their safety while using the road as the matter gets resolved.

"We assure all motorists and other road users that our officers are still on-site working to ensure free flow of traffic and security along the said route," NPS stated.

Road users on Waiyaki Way were disrupted by the strike, forcing cars to seek alternate routes to and from Nairobi's Central Business District.
