Uhuru has asked the National Assembly to approve the nomination.

Lady Justice Martha Koome will thus be vetted by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and issue a report within 28 days.

National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi referred the message to the committee in order to undertake the hearings.

“The committee is requested to consider the nomination on a priority basis,” he said.

According to the Kenyan Constitution, if the National Assembly approves the nominee, the President shall then in three days after receiving the notification appoint the nominee.

If the National Assembly rejects the nominee, then the President will within three days submit the name of a new nominee.

After the name has been returned to the President, the nominee will then be sworn in to fill the Chief Justice post.

Justice Koome has 33 years of experience in legal practice under her belt and a significant portion of those years has been in public service as a defender of human rights.
