President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday oversaw the official opening of a local gun manufacturing plant established at a cost of Sh4billion.

Situated in Ruiru, Kiambu county, the project will help Kenya in self-reliance enhancement by ensuring that the country can produce its own ammunition.

The plant is expected to be yielding at least 1,000 firearms every month, which translates to 12,000 firearms annually. This will save the nation up to 60% of importation costs.

This will in turn save the taxpayers billions of cash that are paid by the nation to foreign nations as acquisition fees for firearms.

Additionally, it will help create about 1,200 direct and indirect job opportunities, at a time when the employment rate has continued going up.
