ODM leader Raila Odinga has spoken for the first time since his admission to Nairobi Hospital on Wednesday, March 10 for treatment.

In a statement, he lauded Kenyans for sending him messages of goodwill and assured them he was recovering well.

"Wakenya wenzangu, thank you for the overwhelming messages of goodwill. I’m feeling much much better now and following doctors' orders," Odinga stated.

The family's consultant neurosurgeon, David Oluoch, indicated that Odinga had checked into the hospital for routine medical tests after feeling fatigued.

"He has had a rigorous campaign and needed to have some checkup. This was carried out successfully. He is still undergoing some further investigations with a team of doctors and has been advised to take a rest," reads an excerpt of a statement.

Oluoch added that a team of doctors will be continuing to keep an eye on his condition.

"He is in good spirits," Oluoch assured.

Odinga's son, Raila Junior, added that the former Prime Minister had contacted him and asked to speak to his grandson.

"He is good and actually called for a few minutes to speak with his grandson about school and the importance of porridge," Junior stated.

Odinga was admitted to the hospital under heavy security who restricted visitors from seeing him.

There were also several unconfirmed reports that Tanzania's President John Magufuli had been admitted to the hospital, with opposition leader Tundu Lissu informing BBC on Wednesday that he has since been transferred to India for treatment.

Neither the government of Tanzania nor Kenya has issued an official statement on the same.
