Solskjaer took some risks, going with three centre-backs and shifting away from playing with any wingers. Instead, Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo both started in attack.

The Norwegian was under immense pressure after the 5-0 hammering against Liverpool, but led United to a 3-0 win over Spurs.

"It has been a tough week for the players, for the fans, for the club and for me," Solskjaer said.

"I've tried to stay away from all of the noise, but you're aware of what's going on."

Ronaldo, Cavani and Marcus Rashford were all on target against Spurs, as United's older players stepped up to lead from the front. They played well together and looked promising.

Ronaldo carried the team from the front with a goal and an assist. He opened the scoring with a sumptuous strike, connecting with a cross from countryman Bruno Fernandes, ending a 454-minute drought in the Premier League. He then went on to assist Cavani for the second goal.

"We had a difficult week after an unexpected result," Ronaldo said.

"The criticism wasn't bothering me because I've played 18 years of football and I know that one day it's perfect and another day we are crap. I know that and we have to deal with this, but it's always better when the people praise you. But sometimes we have to pass through truly bad moments and we have to change, and we changed."
