It is well known that any animal will feed on something that will supply its body with nutrients. Invertebrates also follow the same line of order as they will have various foods to choose from, but I am sure that rocks would not be part of them. In 2018, a type of shipworm shocked the whole world when it was seen feeding on a rock. 
This provoked scientists into doing various research concerning the same. Many of them came up with a wide array of suggestions trying to give the reason for the unusual behavior of the clam. Some of them could not explain whether these rocks were of any nutritional value to the organisms. Among those who gave suggestions were the local women who argued out that the stones were vital to these organisms, especially the lactating members of the group.
Another group made a quite sensible deduction. This group said that clams were doing this behavior, not because of any benefit that they will get but because the rocks were in the way of their holes or rather burrows. Instead of making ways away from the rock, they prefer eating out a form through these rocks and excrete the rock particles later. It is quite a mesmerizing behavior.
