BREAKING NEWS: Senate Passes the BBI Bill

More than two-thirds of the senators 52 of the 67 senators voted in favor of the bill with only 12 senators voting No with only one senator abstaining from the vote.

Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Amendment bill 2020 debate resumed in the Senate on Tuesday morning ahead of the voting.

The lawmakers voted on the bill after three weeks of debate characterized by calls to amend the document.

Senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka ruled out amending the constitution (Amendment) Bill 2020.

According to Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka, the Bill is a product of a popular initiative and thus parliament has no power to alter with the document.

"Parliament cannot replace public views with its own," Lusaka said.

A group of senators was clamoring to amend the BBI Bill, with three officially writing to the speaker recommending a raft of changes regarding the creation and distribution of 70 additional constituencies being the elephant in the room.

Senators Enoch Wambua (Kitui), Irungu Kang'ata (Murang’a), and Samson Cherargei (Nandi) sought the speaker’s nod to introduce the amendments.
