Six of the seven died on the spot, while one died while being rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Six people were killed in their personal cars.

Rebecca Ndiragu, Deputy County Commissioner for Lower Yatta, confirmed the accident and the deaths of the six people.

It took place between the Kanyonyoo and Kivandini markets.

The road is said to be under construction and has been a hazard to motorists.

This comes days after a road accident was witnessed near the Kanyonyoo junction on the Thika – Kitui highway.

The 14-seater matatu, which is said to have carried up to 24 passengers, was transporting people from Nzokani village in Kitui west, who were believed to be relatives from a dowry event in the Mbondoni area in Mwingi west.

According to Kitui County Police Commander Leah Kithei, nine of them died on the spot, while two others died in hospital while being treated for their injuries.

‘’The matatu lost control and rolled several times along a sloppy stretch before crashing. Nine people died instantly while two succumbed in a hospital, one at Kitui level four hospital and the other at Matuu level four hospital,’’ Leah stated.

Ms. Kithei confirmed that Nakimu Sacco's vehicle had excess passengers whose number police had not properly established, but area assistant chief Jacob Mueti, who was among the first responders on the scene, reported that the vehicle had 24 passengers.
