Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko can now breathe a sigh of relief after the court blocked the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) from questioning him as he receives treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

The court ruled on Tuesday, February 16 that the ex-county boss will face terrorism charges leveled against him once he is discharged from the hospital.

The judge further ordered Sonko to be confined in his hospital bed until his health is restored to normal.

Sonko was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday, February 9 amid his ruling at the Kiambu Law Courts where he was expected to answer to assault and robbery with violence charges.

Sources at the time claimed that the former Makadara Member of Parliament had developed stomach complications.

The embattled former county boss is expected to face terror charges after the DCI claimed that he was financing the purchase of firearms and was a leader of a secret militant group.

In a separate case, he was accused of invading private property in May 2019 as well as assaulting civilians at Buruburu Estate, which he denied.

The present court case involves the detectives aiming to hold him for 30 days pending investigations into Sonko's links to alleged terrorism and financing.

Over nine other suspects have also been arrested and will be arraigned alongside Sonko to answer for charges.

The detectives, according to sources within the investigative body on Monday, February 8, are also investigating scenarios where Sonko allegedly escaped from Shimo La Tewa Prison over 20 years ago.
