South Africa: Mamelodi Sundowns wins the DStv Premiership League title for the fourth time consecutively.

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated ten-man SuperSport United 3-1 to emerge the winners of the DStv Premiership title for the fourth time in a row in a match played at Loftus Versfield Stadium on Wednesday.

The win became their 11th league title in their history of Premier Soccer League with three games remaining for the 2020/21 season.

Goals from Lebohang Maboe, Aubrey Modiba and Themba Zwane ensured that Sundowns move further ahead at the top of the log with 10 points clear from the chasing pack. The defeat on the other hand left SuperSport in the sixth position having managed to score a solitary goal through Teboho Mokoena.

Sundowns nearly got their first goal of the match but striker Gaston Sirino hit the woodwork in the opening minute of the clash. The Uruguayan rounded Ronwen Williams in the SuperSport goal but failed to find the target from an acute angle.

In the seventh minute, Guily Manziba received a straight red card after a reckless challenge on Sundowns’s midfielder Sphelele Mkhulisa leaving SuperSport to play the rest of the game down to 10-men.

SuperSport almost got their opener in the 29th minute after Bradly Grobler took advantage of a loose pass from Brian Onyango only for the Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango coming to the rescue.

Three minutes later, Maboe found the back of the net for Sundowns when Modiba connected a cross from Sirino to him. They got their third goal in the 40th minute when Modiba’s cross was deflected into the goal.

As the game was about to go to halftime, Zwane gave Sundowns the third goal through Modiba’s second assist of the day.

On the 54th minute, Sundowns got a penalty when Keenan Philips handled the ball inside the box. However Zwane’s spot kick was stopped by Williams.

Finally the SuperSport relentless fight was rewarded in 88th minute when Mokoena rescued them from going home goalless by scoring a long range goal making the score to be 3-1 in favour of the Sundowns.

Despite of Sundowns Denis Onyango walking away from the field after a hand injury thus forcing Brian to be the goalkeeper since they had exhausted their substitution, they managed to clinch the league title at the stoppage time.
