The Birmingham based club is contemplating on their next man in charge soon enough for the home fixture against Brighton just after the international break, Nov 20.

Former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard, 41, is more set to be in charge of that match. Dean Smith was fired on Sunday after a five-game losing streak in the league and currently the Villa Park residents are sitting 16th on the Premier League table. The Villa leadership discussed Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, but Gerrard has always been the choice, and efforts to secure an appointment will intensify before the weekend.

Gerrard's success in reviving Rangers and reclaiming the Scottish title in 2021 from Celtic - who had won it for the previous nine seasons - has impressed Villa's management, who have put his name at the top of their want list. Villa chief executive Christian Purslow, who knows him well from his time at Liverpool, admires and respects him.

While Gerrard has long been regarded as Liverpool's future manager, the attraction of returning to the Premier League with a stable, ambitious team is alluring. If Gerrard accepts the job at Villa Park, it will be a devastating blow to Rangers, who put their faith in him by appointing him to his first significant management position in 2018.
