A 17-year-old girl is being held by police in Kwale County and is suspected of stealing five kids from Mombasa.

The teenage girl was found with two boys and three girls aged 10, 9, 6, 3, and 1.

According to Kinango Sub County Police Commander Fred Ombaka, she was detained on Friday at Taru Trading Centre.

“The members of the public raised alarm when she claimed that the children were her siblings. Our interrogations have established that the girl had taken the children from the streets in Mombasa promising to take them to Nairobi,” he said.

He also said that the alleged trafficker, who may have exaggerated her age, said she was going to help the kids but could not say what type of help.

Ombaka said the girl had boarded the bus in Taru, with the intention of traveling to Nairobi, but were instead let off there due to a shortage of bus tickets.

He said that the minors, who are originally from Bofu in Kwale, were beggars in Mombasa streets because their mother is an illegal brewer. This was proven by the police, he said.

The kids are currently in a rescue facility on Mackinnon Road, where they will likely be released after the woman in question produces identification documents.

“She has to confirm that the children are all hers by producing birth certificates. That is when we will release them,” said Ombaka.

The mother is likely to affirm if she is in a position to care for the children, so the court and a children's officer will also decide whether she gets the kids back, he continued.
