Koech managed to beat Amos Serem of Central Rift, clocking eight minutes and 18.43 seconds ahead of Amos who clocked 8:20.26 to finish second and have been offered the honors to represent Kenya in winning the steeplechase title Kenya relinquished during the 2018 Tampere Championships.

"I am really impressed and I thank God since I have been waiting for this opportunity since last year. I am going for nothing but gold so as to emulate my training mate Leonard Bett and the likes of Ezekiel Kemboi and Conseslus Kipruto," said Koech.

Chepkoech won with 9:32.99 ahead of Faith Cherotich from South Rift who finished second with 9:33.02 to also earn a ticket to represent team Kenya and succeed fellow countrywoman Celliphine Chespol, who won in 2016 Bydgozszc and 2018 Tampere.
