The Islamic State (IS) group claims to be behind the deadly Shiite Mosque bombings.

The Islamic State Group, an antagonist of both the West and the Taliban, late Friday claimed to be responsible for the bomb strike on Kandahar province’s Fatimiya mosque that left more than forty people dead and maimed scores of believers.

The Islamic State Group, an antagonist of both the West and the Taliban, late Friday claimed to be responsible for the bomb strike on Kandahar province’s Fatimiya mosque that left more than forty people dead and maimed scores of believers. As much as the Taliban assures the world of restoring peace and security in Afghanistan, the recent attack brings into question the group’s ability to maintain peace in the country.

The IS group highlighted the attack, explaining that two of the group’s members orchestrated the attack, having first killed the mosque’s security guards at the entrance. One member detonated explosives inside the mosque and the other at the entrance. Interestingly, the IS group’s news agency proudly documented the names of the attackers, who happen to be Afghan citizens.

The South Afghanistan bombing comes a week after an affiliate with the IS group asserted that the northern Afghanistan bombing was their doing. The group, which normally instigates violent attacks in the eastern regions of the country, their recent advancements, create fears of a growing threat. These attacks are the deadliest since the United States exit from Afghanistan, with Friday’s attack being the most harrowing.
