"We've been going an operation aiming cracking down matatus flouting Covid19 rules, so today we've been able to crack down several vehicles. Often, matatu operators fail to comply with the laid down rules but we will go on with the operation until we achieve our goal" said Kitavi.

Mr Kitavi said that most matatus operators carry excess passengers while regularly ignoring Covid 19 measures such as ensuring everyone who boards the matatu wear a mask, maintaining the recommended social distance of one and a half metres between each passenger.

He further warned members of the public from boarding already loaded matatus saying that it's not only the responsibility of the government alone but every member of the public to keep Covid 19 at bay.

"I'd like to warn passengers too, because every time they board overloaded matatus. Failure to which, we will arrest you," Kitavi added.

Joan Nyakio, a resident of Thika, blamed matatu operators who regularly flaunt Covid rules by carrying excess passengers, she says that most of the passengers end up boarding the matatus out of desperation of getting to their destinations on time.

"At times you're forced to board the matatu without following any Covid 19 protocol, so you just have to board the matatu out of desperation," Nyakio said.
