Nandi Senator Samson Kiprotich Cherargei has threatened to write to the Speaker of the Senate Ken Lusaka seeking summons to be issued to top government officials over recent move to replace security detail at Deputy President William Ruto’s residences.

Cherargei says Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant, Head of Public Service, and the head of the presidential service unit should all be summoned to explain why there was a change of security at Ruto’s residences.

The National Police Service (NPS) last week announced that it had replaced highly trained GSU officers stationed at DP Ruto’s residences in Karen, Nairobi, his Sugoi rural home in Uasin Gishu, and Eldoret town – in a move that has sparked an uproar among a section of the politicians.

Even though the police say the move was part of normal police reassignment, Cherargei says replacing GSU officers with Administration Police (AP) officers amounts to exposing the DP and his family to personal harm.

“We want those involved to tell the country why they have withdrawn the security detail of his Excellency the deputy president. For some of us we see this as exposing him to personal harm,” the Senator told reporters in Eldoret town.

According to the legislator, the NPS acted against the law in replacing GSU with APs as the law clearly spells out who is in charge of the security of the Deputy President.
