A 14-seater matatu and a trailer collided in a head-on collision on the famous Salgaa-Sachangwan blackspot, which is around 11 km from Sobea.

The matatu was traveling to Eldoret while the trailer was heading in the opposite direction, according to Rongai sub-county Police Commander Wilberforce Netondo.

“The matatu rammed into the trailer in a head-on collision. The driver of the matatu died on the spot while one passenger was confirmed dead on arrival at Nakuru Level Five Hospital,” Netondo said

The injured were brought to Nakuru Level Five Hospital after the 4 p.m. accident, while the deceased was taken to the Nakuru City Mortuary.

According to witnesses, the matatu driver was speeding and overtaking another car when he collided with the oncoming lorry.

"Because he was speeding, he could not control the vehicle, which rammed into the trailer," said James Ombati.

The matatu's wreckage was transported to Salgaa Police Station.

The stretch of the bustling Nakuru-Eldoret highway between Sobea and Salgaa has become a death trap for vehicles, especially at night.

Hundreds of individuals have died on the road since the beginning of the year. Sobea, Salgaa, Migaa, Sachangwan, and Mau Summit are the most difficult sections. The stretch has become well-known, particularly among drivers unfamiliar with the road.

A succession of incidents in the Salgaa area spurred the government to erect a concrete barrier, eventually reducing the road carnage.

Recently in Embu County, two people were killed when a car crashed into the Rubingazi River near Mwiria Bridge.

The driver of the Probox lorry lost control and landed in the flooded river while delivering keg beer from Manyatta town to Kathangariri market.

Only one passenger, a woman, among the three individuals aboard the car, was able to be rescued.
