Two Fishermen Drown In Lake Victoria

The incident occurred at Nyangina Beach and it is believed that the boat they were using capsized on Friday night leading to the deaths.

Two other fishermen who were on board at the time of the event, in which a passenger ferry traveling from Luanda K’otieno to Mbita rammed with the fishing boat, narrowly avoided death.

The survivors were able to swim very close to shore, before being rescued by other fishermen.

According to Nyangina Beach Management Unit chairman Joseph Ouma Kaseu, the ferry's captain allegedly missed the boat because of poor visibility brought on by darkness.

By the time of publication, the bodies of the two fishermen had not yet been found, but authorities from the Kenya Coast Guard Services(KCGS) are now making efforts to find them.

On April,3, 2022 at Awana beach, Karachuonyo constituency a 26-year-old fisherman drowned in Lake Victoria on after the boat capsized owing to severe winds.

Fishermen were instructed by area chief John Aron to put on life jackets before fishing, claiming it made it simpler to save them in the event of an accident.

In another incident at Kisaka Beach in Lambwe West, fishermen around the Lake Victoria region are alarmed by the emergence of contaminated water, 'black water' back into their fish reservoirs.

Many fish have washed up on the coasts as a result of the widespread fish mortality caused by the contaminated water. The fishermen have suffered losses as selling these fish is how they make their living.

Black water, is a natural occurrence in water bodies where oxygen levels are lowered owing to a sudden change in the chemical composition of water.
