One of the perceived strongholds for the Deputy President William Ruto’s part is Rift Valley where the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is projecting to register at least a million new voters during the Mass Voter Registration exercise that was launched across the country on Monday.

To ensure the region hits its target, UDA-allied legislators have now devised a strategy that will see them focus on rallying the youths, many of whom they think have Identity Cards, but have not yet been registered as voters.

According to the Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Boss, the youth will make up a majority of voters in 2022 – a fact that has informed their strategy.

“There are over 7 million youths across the country with no voter’s card and we want to ensure they get registered as our campaigns will be useless if we don’t have youths taking part,” said the Woman Rep in Eldoret town.

“It is these youths who have many problems and we want them to take the lead in deciding our next leaders, something they can only do if they are registered as voters,” she added.

The former Registrar of Judiciary further revealed that they had formed a special team that will be moving around the chiefs’ offices and look at any uncollected ID cards, and later coordinate with village elders to ensure every eligible person registers as a voter.

She also called on the National Bureau of Registration to enhance the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) so that more youths acquire the ID cards on time before the voter registration exercise closes down.

Rift Valley is considered one of the key DP Ruto strongholds, alongside the youth whom he hopes to convince to back his presidential bid using the Hustler Nation narrative and the Bottoms-Up economic model that his government promises to adopt.
