Kenyans expressed desire on the reception accorded to the athletes by the country's Head of State, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, during the official homecoming on Tuesday, August 10, and the mega luncheon on Wednesday, August 11.

The athletes, who participated in the Olympics, competed alongside their Kenyan peers.

While posting on his official Twitter handle, President Museveni directed the government to continue paying the athletes monthly as well as clear any pending arrears not paid to previous winners.

"I made an order in 2013 that anybody who wins gold at a continental level, commonwealth, or Olympics be paid Shs5m per month, Shs3m & Shs1 million for silver & bronze. I am told they are being paid quarterly. I speak English very well, let their money be paid, even the arrears," Museveni remarked in a public statement.

Uganda bagged two gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Peruth Chemutai and Joshua Cheptegei with latter also bagging the country's bronze while Jacob Kiplimo won a bronze medal.

The four medalists were each given a brand new motor vehicle with the Museveni government undertaking to construct houses for their parents.

Kenyans compared and contrasted the treatment of the Ugandan athletes to that of Kenyan athletes. Kenyans claimed that their heroes were quickly forgotten by the government despite making the country proud.
