President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered the entire Cabinet as well as all senior staff in the Executive to lead in taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

State House Chief Of Staff Nzioka Waita confirmed Uhuru's order via Twitter while posting a picture of himself receiving the COVID-19 jab.

"As the government scales up the rollout of the national COVID-19 vaccine program, the President has directed his entire Cabinet and Executive Office to lead by example and get the jab! Received mine this morning under the watchful guidance of the Ministry of Health vaccination team," noted Nzioka.

This is a U-turn from a past government communication that revealed that politicians were excluded from the priority list of being vaccinated with the first batch of the vaccine.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe noted that 1.25 million Kenyans will receive a dose of the first batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine, including frontline workers and excluding politicians.

This was after alleged reports on social media that politicians were planning to hijack the queue and receive the vaccine.

Meanwhile, Kenyans are hesitant about taking the vaccine, which has led to a low turnout. Their fears have been coupled with a series of suspensions of the coronavirus vaccine across Europe, which was developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

They erupted after several European governments suspended the use of the vaccine as a precautionary measure following reports of blood clots.

Despite vaccine safety experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealing low cases of the sort, they stated that they were reviewing the jab afresh. Symptoms emanating from the vaccine include headache and pain in the arm.

The vaccine was launched in the country on March 5, with data showing that nearly 70,000 people have so far been reached against the 1.25 million targets by June 30.

Kenyans have been asked to present themselves for the vaccine courageously as the national case tally from COVID-19 continues to rocket upwards from the third wave.
