The United Nations mission in Mali has demanded an immediate release of President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, after reports that they were detained by soldiers.

In a tweet, the Minusma mission called for calm in Mali after reports that the interim President Ndaw and Mr. Ouane had been driven by soldiers to the Kati military camp near the capital, Bamako.

The detention raised fears of a second coup within a year in the country.

On Monday evening, Mr. Ouane told AFP in a phone call that soldiers "came to get him". However, the news agency said the line was then cut.

Defence Minister Souleymane Doucouré is also alleged to have been detained.

The AU, the Economic Community of the West African States, the EU, and the US have condemned the detention, saying Mali's top politicians must be released without any demands.

The detentions came just hours after a government reshuffle, which saw two senior army officers who took part in last year's coup replaced.

Mali once again is looking unstable just nine months after the military coup that saw President Ibrahim Keïta being removed from office.

2012 coup led to militant Islamists exploiting the instability to seize territory in northern Mali.
