Unbelievable! Why President Uhuru Went Off Script During Justice Koome's Swearing In

The new chief justice Martha Koome on Friday 21, May 2021 was sworn in at statehouse with key officials gracing the occasion. President Uhuru Kenyatta presided over as Justice Martha Koome took the oath of office. The president however decided not to use his prepared speech done by his team which shocked many.

 The president mentioned that he did not intend to tell the new CJ how to do her job.

In a statement, he said: “These people here (handlers) prepared for me a long story for me to say…but I purposely say I will not because it is not for me to tell you(justice Koome) how to execute your work.”

The president went on congratulating Martha koome for being the first woman to clinch the position.

’It's a singular honour to be the first president to swear in the first female Chief Justice of Kenya," Uhuru said.

The president further surprised many after he read the same words that were said by koome during the swearing-in order to remind her to be guided by them throughout her tenure.

''Just to remind you of the oath you have taken, '...and to impartially do justice in accordance with this Constitution as by law established and the laws and customs of the Republic of Kenya without any fear, favour, bias, affection, ill-will, prejudice and any political, religious or any other influence in the exercise of the judicial functions entrusted to you and to the best of your knowledge and ability, protect, administer and defend this Constitution with a view to upholding the dignity and the respect for the judiciary and the judicial system of Kenya and promoting fairness, independence, competence and integrity within it'," Uhuru emphasized.

At the end of his speech, Uhuru urged Koome to promote and uphold fairness, independence, and integrity.

"Mine is to wish you God's blessings as you embark on your duties. We will pray for you. We are here to partner with you and work together with you," he said.

"Fanya haki tu, na hatutakua na shida (Just be fair and there will be no problem)." He concluded
