US Embassy Clarifies on the Security Intelligence Alert in Kisumu

The US Embassy in Nairobi defended its position, stating that such alerts to American citizens are common in the run-up to elections around the world.

"The United States has no information to suggest the security situation in Kisumu, or in any other parts of Kenya, have been adversely affected by election preparations," the Embassy spokesperson stated.

The advisory issued on Tuesday raised concerns that the US may have had information about a potential security threat in Kisumu.

The Embassy, however, stated that it bears a greater responsibility for the safety and security of U.S. citizens and that such alerts, including on extreme weather, are commonplace to ensure that its citizens have information that helps inform travel plans.

The embassy stated that Kisumu is home to a large number of US Embassy personnel and is a popular travel destination for American citizens.

The United States warned its citizens on Tuesday not to travel to Kisumu due to election-related protests.

"Demonstrations may occasionally be violent, requiring police intervention. Strikes and other protest activities related to economic conditions occur regularly," the US Embassy department stated.

Kisumu governor Anyang Nyong'o, on the other hand, also dismissed the statement, claiming that the county is safe for anyone visiting during the election campaign.
