VIDEO: PSV Operators Demonstrate in Westlands Blocking the Expressway Entrance

On the morning of May 19, matatu operators were witnessed protesting on the Waiyaki way in Westlands blocking both sides of the road and disrupting the traffic flow.

Police were forced to fire tear gas at the protesting drivers and conductors, closing down the Westlands Roundabout.

Traffic officers were also called in to assist with the problem, which has stranded hundreds of commuters.

Reports stated that matatu operators were protesting for the removal of the stage near the Westlands roundabout to make way for the Expressway toll station.

The matatu operators also claimed that police officers harassed them while dropping off and picking up passengers at the terminal. Authorities claimed that PSVs were blocking the entrance to the Nairobi Expressway.

Following the disruptions, commuters caught up in early morning traffic were forced to walk long distances to their destination.

An official of the Moja Expressway company confirmed to a local media house that they were aware of the situation and were working to resolve it.

A portion of the raucous protestors have been apprehended by police officers attempting to ease traffic congestion.

Drivers have been advised to use alternative routes to their destinations.
