Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) gunned down a wanted suspect who was alleged to be part of a criminal gang that was terrorizing residents of the Eastlands area in Nairobi.

In a statement by the DCI, the suspect identified as Abbas alerted detectives on patrol on Kangundo Road as he was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle without a registration number.

“Detectives gave chase and flagged down the motorcycle but instead of pulling over, the pillion passenger drew a firearm and started shooting at our officers indiscriminately,” noted the detectives on Monday, March 1.

Detectives then responded with gunfire and amidst the exchange, the suspect was killed instantly.

The rider however managed to escape leaving the motorcycle behind, however, detectives are hot on his trail.

One Glock pistol is suspected to have been stolen from a police officer. Three live rounds of 9mm caliber, and 11 other live ammunition of different caliber were recovered after the shootout.

The DCI added that the recovered items indicate that the suspect might have been in possession of another firearm.

“Abbas was a dangerous criminal connected to a spate of murders within Buru Buru, Kayole and Dandora, including the shooting of a woman in Kariobangi who was lucky to survive, a few months ago,” added the detectives.

The firearm was collected by ballistics experts for further analysis, with the motorbike detained.

The shootout came a day after a faceless policeman alleged to be behind the Facebook and Twitter pages dubbed ‘Hessy wa Dandora’ issued a warning to muggers and petty thieves that are reported to operate along Outering road.

“Been alerted of insecurity at Outering footbridges from Alsops, Naivas, Kariobangi/Kiamaiko, Equity, and Donholm. Manhunt has started in swift succession. Pedestrians are knocked down by cars because the muggers are waiting for them at the foot bridge.” he tweeted.
