While speaking during the launch of Maternal High Dependency Unit and New-born Unit at KNH Othaya, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said that Ministry of Health will retake back the covid-19 doses from counties with low vaccine uptake.

The CS noted that, with the challenges the country is experiencing as a result of a surge in covid-19 cases in India, they cannot allow vaccines to expire.

“Because we cannot have the vaccines expire, we must therefore recapture and redistribute from counties that are slow at carrying out the exercise,” said Kagwe.

Up to Friday, May 7,  911 515 people had been vaccinated against Covid-19. 

Among them, 531 540 are those aged above 58 years and others, 160 468 health workers, 142 624 teachers and non-teaching staff, and 76 578 security officers.

The country has, however, recorded the lowest rate of 6.3%, from a sample size of 9029, which is equal to 568 new cases within the past 24hours.
From the new cases, 551 are Kenyans whereas 17 are foreigners.

The results sum the total confirmed positive cases to 162 666 and a cumulative test to 1 710 414.

The 568 cases, 344 males and 224 females, comprise a one-year old baby, the youngest and the oldest at 105 years.

On records were 15 deaths,5 gotten from the adverse dates of the last one month whereas 10 are the late death reports from the facility report audits. 

The cumulative death toll in the country stands at 2865.

173 patients also recovered from the pandemic; 130 were from the home based care units while 43 were discharged from the health facilities. 

The total number of recoveries in the country, as at May 7, are 110 653.

The CS also confirmed that 1086 patients are currently admitted at various health facilities, 6381 patients are under home based care isolation units, 131 in Intensive Care Unit.

28 of those in ICU are under ventilatory support, 83 on supplemental oxygen, and 20 on observation.

According to the report, another 111 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 103 in general wards and eight patients in High Dependency Unit.

KNH, Othaya received 500 PPEs and 5 000 facemasks from the Ministry of Health to effect the doctors response to the pandemic.
