What Causes Low Milk Supply That New Mums Should Know

A small number of women experience breast milk production issues, but there are several factors that may cause a shortage that they need to know.

What Causes Low Milk Supply That New Mums Should Know

1. Bottle Feeding

Breast milk production is still being studied by researchers. However, most experts believe that it is significantly dependent on your body's hormones in regards to supply and Demand.

How To Increase Milk Supply

Prolactine Hormone: is a hormone that tells your body that it needs to create more milk. As your infant breastfeeds, your body produces more milk by increasing prolactin levels. Skin-to-skin contact with your infant promotes production as well

Oxytocin: This hormone instructs breast muscles to expel milk, making breastfeeding simpler.

The use of formula or bottle-feeding can lower milk production. Your body produces less milk when your baby consumes less of your milk.

2. Pacifiers

It is a rubber, plastic, or silicone nipple substitute given to an infant to suckle upon between feedings to quiet its distress by satisfying the need to suck when it does not need to eat.

Babies that use a pacifier are also less likely to suckle on your breast. Because hormones like oxytocin and the protein prolactin aren't boosted, milk production reduces.

3. Dehydration: Many breastfeeding mothers are also unaware that their level of hydration can have an impact on milk supply.

This is a condition in which fluid loss exceeds fluid intake. You may be unable to make enough breast milk if you are dehydrated.

NOTE: Breast Milk is generally 80% water.

Dehydration can occur if you do not drink enough fluids or lose them too quickly. This means your body may not have enough water to produce adequate breast milk for your child.

4. Health Issues

Women who have hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, or diabetes may have difficulties making enough milk. Low milk production can also be caused by rare medical problems such as mammary hypoplasia and inadequate glandular tissue (IGT). Lactation may be challenging for women who have had breast surgery or trauma.
