Athletics is one of the most popular sports in Kenya today. This is because of the pride the athletes have brought to the country by winning major races globally – be it World Championships, Olympics, or Diamond League.

To be a successful athlete, there is so much that goes around behind the scenes – in terms of exercises as this makes one be able to compete on the level playing ground with other athletes.

But even as we always sing praises to our athletes for winning medals, it is now emerging that older athletes face health issues, especially with their bones.

David Momanyi, an administrator at an Eldoret-based health facility – Total Care notes that former athletes in the country are now facing many issues related to bones because they failed to go for regular medical checkups when they were still active in the sports.

“The old athletes, especially those that were active in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s we have been helping them in medical issues as we have noticed many have issues with their bones,” says Momanyi who now advises the current crop of athletes to always be going for regular medical checkup.

The hospital recently held a medical camp in Eldoret town targeting the older athletes who benefited from free medical checkup.

At least 250 older athletes benefited from the initiative.

Eldoret town is home to many athletes and is usually referred to as the City of Champions based on the fact that a majority of the athletes from neighboring counties of Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi prefer investing in the town – where they also live in.
