Why The Police Have Embarked on Tight Security Vigilance by Blocking Nairobi Roads & Mounting Search on All Cars

This move seems to be unusual to the Nairobians since it has been igniting massive traffic snarl-ups for days.

However, speaking to Bright Kenya news, Source privy to the matter revealed that the reason barricading the roads is that officers from the National Police Service (NPS), with the help of the National Youth Service (NYS), have been inspecting every car in both lanes of the major roads.

The source also added that the officers seem to be on a mission to curb drug dealers, suspected criminals by observing the reactions of every motorist on the road.

The exercise is reported to be occurring near the Quiver Lounge and Grill opposite Garden City, Baptist Church near garden city, Mombasa Road just after SGR with commuters reporting that the traffic citation is much worse around the mentioned areas.

“So @NPSOfficial_KE have put up a roadblock on Mombasa Road just after SGR on your way to Nairobi that is causing a massive traffic jam. Will Msa Rd. users ever be free from unnecessary traffic”?.," a commuter stated.

On the other hand, some concerned Kenyans on Twitter have reported that police in some roadblock areas are receiving bribes from Bodaboda operators.

“Kenya police is a total joke. Now soliciting for tea from Boda Boda riders at the roadblock on the service lane of Thika superhighway where they are supposed to check for terrorist suspects who escaped from Kamiti. Shame

However, it remains unclear as to what has prompted the officers to mount the massive exercise on the popular roads, but the exercise comes barely days after three Kamiti Maximum Prison strongly armed inmates escaped the police custody on Monday 15th November.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations {DCI} declared three criminals wanted.

According to the DCI, the Trio criminals were Mohamed Ali Bikar who is part of the terrorists who carried out the 2015 Garissa University terror attack that left several students dead. DCI added that he is “armed and dangerous."

Others were Joseph Juma Odhiambo alias Yusuf and Masharaf Abdallah Akhulunga alias Zarkawi. He is also known as Alex or Shukri.

DCI further added that the trio is "armed and dangerous” and therefore anybody who will have any information of their whereabouts shall be rewarded a total amount of Ksh. 20,000,000.

The escape of the three criminals further led to the arrest of Seven Wardens at the Kamiti Maximum Prison on Tuesday 16th with Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang`i stating that the prison break was caused by the negligence of the wardens.

CS Matiang`i who led a senior security Team at Kamiti prison on Monday 15th evening added that a massive manhunt involving specialized teams had been launched across the country to re-arrested the trio of terror suspects.

“We will not only go the direction investigations will point us but we will act resolutely to ensure this kind of recklessness does not happen again because it exposes our people,” Matiang’i said.

However, in a twist turn of events on Wednesday 17th President Uhuru Kenyatta fired the Commissioner-General of the Kenya Prisons, Wycliffe Ogalo following the escape of three terror convicts.

In a statement, the President appointed Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba as his replacement.

"His Excellency the President has today appointed and witnessed the swearing-in of Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba as the Commissioner-General of the Kenya Prisons Service," the statement said.

"It is also notified that His Excellency the President had earlier today revoked with immediate effect the appointment of Mr. Wycliffe Ogallo as the Commissioner-General of Kenya."

The outgoing Prison boss was further arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Anti Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) barely hours after he was sacked.

In another similar event that could have prompted the National Police Service (NPS) to tighten the security in within the town and the borders is after a twin explosion occurred in Kenya’s neighboring country Kampala Uganda on Tuesday 16th November.

The fatal explosions were believed to have been caused by three suicide bombers at Kooki towers, opposite Central Police Station in Kampala and Parliamentary Avenue further leaving 6 people dead and 33 injured.

Following Uganda`s attack, Kenya`s NPS on social media assured the public of their safety.

"We have activated our security installations across the country with heightened security within our towns and borders. While we remain on high alert to safeguard residents and their properties, we encourage the public to be watchful of any suspicious persons and activities within their neighborhoods and report them to the nearest police station or on our toll-free numbers 999/112 and 0800722203," read the NPS' statement on social media.

Addressing the press hours after the blasts, the Ugandan police revealed that the incidents at Kooki towers, opposite Central Police Station in Kampala and Parliamentary Avenue were carried out by three suicide bombers who died on the spot.
