Zachariah Nyaora Obadiah, the mastermind of a gang that sexually harassed a female motorist in Nairobi a week ago, has been detained for ten days.

He was held to allow police to complete their investigations into the attack on a Zimbabwean national, a UN official, on Nairobi's Wangari Maathai Road.

Senior principal magistrate Robinson Ondiek of the Milimani Law Courts stated police need more time to complete their investigation into the incident, which is of considerable public interest.

According to the application, the suspect is one of the people who was seen on camera abusing the victim in a viral video clip, then fled into hiding and eluded arrest.

The motorcyclists sexually attacked the victim as she was inside her car, robbing her of an iPhone worth Sh 130 000 in the process.

A custodial order to keep the respondent until March 24 has been requested by the court.

"Therefore, it will be in the interests of justice for this honorable court to give the order and urge to, so that the respondent and his 16 accomplices may be produced to the court on March 24, 2022," police said.

Obadiah, who was apprehended on March 14 while attempting to cross into Tanzania, did not object to his detention for ten days.

Last Monday, 16 people were detained for 20 days on charges of armed robbery and sexual molestation by the female diplomat.

Boda Boda riders, matatu drivers, and conductors are among the suspects.
