IEBC Chair Receives Letter of Appreciation For Conducting Free & Fair Elections

This came after the Executive Committee of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) commended the Chairperson for his bravery in overseeing a fair election in a letter that he shared on September 7th.

A hearty congratulations to our dear brother, Mr. Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya, and his team.

“The Supreme Court validation of the results declaration by the IEBC is a testament of your hard work and efforts,” the statement signed by AAEA Executive Committee Mrs. Jean Mensa read in part.

They also pointed out that despite facing a severe fight from one of the candidates for president, Raila Odinga, the Supreme Court decision had validated his efforts.

“We, the Executive Committee of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA) applaud your tireless efforts in ensuring the credibility of the 2022 Presidential Election in Kenya.

“We pray for continued peace and calm in Kenya and coming days and weeks.,” the AAEA statement added.

On August 15th, William Ruto was declared the winner of the general election on August 9 by Chebukati, much to the displeasure of four of his commissioners who thought he had acted dishonestly.

Odinga was also upset by the result and filed a petition citing major irregularities in the way the exercise was carried out.

Raila asked that he be recognized as the winner of the election or that it be deemed invalid in the petition he submitted with his running companion, Martha Karua.

However, the Supreme Court affirmed the IEBC election in its decision on the grounds that the petitioner provided tenuous evidence in an effort to invalidate the poll.
